Skibbereen Sports and Fitness Centre will be 25 years old next year 2017.

The Sports and Fitness Centre is a not-for-profit community owned facility operated by Skibbereen Sports Centre Ltd. with a professional staff and overseen by a local voluntary Board of Directors. It caters for all age groups from pre-school activities to Go for Life Fitness for the over 55’s.

The Centre has been managed by Mary Kelleher since 2002 and she holds a Guilds of London Institute Diploma in Leisure & Recreation Management. As well as managing Mary also teaches Spinning, Pilates, GP Exercise Referral Programme, Go For Life Fitness Programme as well as one to one sessions in the gym. Niall McCarthy has been Assistant Manager since 2008 and qualified at Waterford Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Health Studies. He is also a certified Spinning Instructor and qualified in the GP Referral Programme and teaches a variety of other classes. Fitness Instructor & Marketing Manager Paula Hegarty is ITEC Certified and teaches various classes and fitness programmes at the centre. The centre also employs Jennie Brickley who is a certified Spinning Instructor.  Tony Salter and Seamus O’Donoghue work as Receptionists/Hall Attendants/Caretakers. The Centre acknowledges the ongoing support of the Department of Social Protection Community Employment Scheme.

The fully equipped gym includes treadmills, cross trainers, rowing machines, gym and recline bikes as well as a fixed weight apparatus and an extensive free weights area. The fitness area has an exercise floor, RIP 60 suspension training frame, bodypump bars, gym mats, gym balls and dumbbells. Membership is available for all ages from 16 upwards through an annual membership fee from €60 to €85 with a €2 fee per gym visit. Non-membership or casual visits to the gym are also available at €8 per session. Individual introductory gym sessions are available and personal fitness programmes including body analyser testing are provided.

There is a wide range of Fitness Classes available from early morning 6.15am to 9.00pm supervised by experienced and professionally trained staff. The centre is an official Spinning Centre with 12 computer monitored spinning bikes with a variety of add-on activities like Spin & Tone, Spin & Cardio and Spin & RIP60. Go For Life Fitness is specifically aimed at the over 60’s while RIP 60 (suspension training), Body Sculpt and High Intensity Interval Training is geared towards the more energetic. Beginner level Pilates is available as well as specially supervised Teen Gym classes for teenagers from 13 to 15 years old.

Short Mat bowling is becoming a very popular activity and Skibbereen Indoor Bowls Club is based in the Sports Hall and has sessions every Wednesday and Thursday where newcomers are welcome.

The main sports hall is available for casual rental for basketball, badminton, indoor soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, short mat bowling, and table tennis. Skibbereen Basketball and Badminton Clubs are based in the Sports Hall.

Organised gymnastics for children (5 to 12 years) is also based in the Sports Hall with qualified instructors and pre-school gymnastics (3 to 4 years) has recently been introduced during school term.

Skibbereen Sports and Fitness Centre wish to acknowledge grant assistance from the Department of Transport Tourism & Sport and Cork County Council.

Skibbereen sports center
